ABOUT OUR 2022 WINNER: 

Carmen Rubin:

Carmen Rubin is an acclaimed and beloved playwright, author of children’s books, interactive Ebooks, and Apps. 

​She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Rutgers University. For decades, she has used her voice to entertain, teach, empower youth, promote literacy, and works diligently to bring diversity and inclusion into literacy and education. 

​In 1999, Carmen founded a non-profit organization, One Blue Village, which supports youth and their families in underserved communities. One Blue Village exposes youth  to colleges and universities and offers educational, emotional, and financial assistance. Many are first-generation college students and go on to become successful citizens of their communities.  Carmen partners with schools and youth organizations across the world and currently serves on Reading is Fundamental’s National REI Advisory Board. 

Carmen is also a certified doula. 

She loves Jazz and spending time with her husband and adult daughters.
